About Bangladesh

Bangladesh is a country of South Asia. The official name of this country is the Peoples Republic of Bangladesh. Myanmar is in the southeast of this country. It is surrounded by India by three sides. There is a southern coastline called as the Bay of Bengal. This country is included in the ethno-linguistic region of Bengal. The meaning of the name Bangladesh is the Country of Bengal.

The borders were set in the partition of India in 1947. Then it became East Pakistan. It was 1600 km away from West Pakistan. The religion and social practices were quite similar in East Pakistan and West Pakistan. But the government was not so caring at all. The government focused on the development of West Pakistan and ignored East Pakistan a lot. As a result, a liberation war took place in 1971 and East Pakistan became independent. It was then named as Bangladesh. There has been thirteen government heads until now and among of them four were from military.

Bangladesh is the eight most densely populated country in the world. It has an area of about 144,000 square km. According to the area it is ranked as the 93rdcountry in the world. The majority of people in this country are Muslims. It is the third largest Muslim country. Geographically it is situated in a very good zone. It has annual monsoon floods. Sometimes cyclone affect this country. Bangladesh is the founding member of SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Co-operation).
